(1) LIVERPOOL are making a shock £10million swoop to land Middlesbrough’s Stewart Downing.
(2) D-DAY for David Bentley’s Blackburn future will be July 7. The England ace has gone public with his wish to leave Ewood Park this summer and Spurs are keen to take him back to London. Liverpool have also been keeping tabs on the former Arsenal man, 23, who insists he wants Champions League football. Ex-boss Mark Hughes told Bentley he was going nowhere and the decision will now rest in the hands of new chief Paul Ince. But Rovers chairman John Williams says nothing will happen before the first day of pre-season training. He said: “The players aren’t back until July 7 so that will be the red-letter day. “Paul knows you can’t get better by selling your best players. “David expressed a wish to leave, but Mark told him he couldn’t. We’ll see if that position has changed. “Paul will talk to David and see where we go from there.” Williams added he was not worried there was a danger of losing Roque Santa Cruz. He said: “I’m not aware there’s been any issue other than speculation. Paul will be itching to get hold of the players and start work in training.”

(1) ARSENAL are set to miss out on Andrei Arshavin after Barcelona launched their bid for the Russia superstar. The Gunners lined up the playmaker, who has starred at Euro 2008, as a replacement for wantaway forward Alex Hleb. Machester City are also chasing Arshavin but Barcelona are now favourites to land the ace. Zenit St Petersburg, who are resigned to losing their star player, have confirmed the Spanish giants have made an offer. Sporting director Konstantin Sarsaniya said: ”Barcelona has made a formal proposal to Zenit for the purchase of Arshavin.” But Premier League clubs could be handed a lifeline after Zenit insisted they will only start negotiations once Russia are knocked out of Euro 2008. Arshavin has led his country to the semi-finals, where they face Spain tonight. Sarsaniya added: “We will only talk about this once Andrei returns to Zenit.”

MANCHESTER CITY have landed Brazilian striker Jo in a club-record £18million deal.
It is new boss Mark Hughes’ first signing after City owner Thaksin Shinawatra assured him there was big money to spend.
CSKA Moscow star Jo, 21, has agreed a four-year deal after he was granted a work permit.
There had been concerns over third-party ownership similar to those which caused controversy with Carlos Tevez’s moves to West Ham and Manchester United But City have ensured CSKA were the sole owners of the player and his former club Corinthians are just owed a 20 per cent sell-on fee.
Moscow president Yevgeni Giner said: “We are still talking to City but have accepted their offer.
“They are going to pay us around £18m — but in my opinion he’s worth much more.
“On the other hand, we have no right to destroy his career. Under the circumstances we need to let him go to England.”
Jo has scored a phenomenal 44 goals in just 77 games during two seasons with Moscow.
Negotiations started under former boss Sven Goran Eriksson and City moved to tie up the deal after AC Milan hijacked their bid for Barcelona star Ronaldinho.
A Milan source said: “I spoke to the player last night and he told me he only wants to play for Milan.
“He will join Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, unless some strange things happen.”
Bolton have completed the capture of Sweden international Johan Elmander from Toulouse.
Elmander has signed a three-year contract and seals a deal Gary Megson has been looking to finalise for six months.
While no fee has been announced, it is estimated to be around the £10million mark, eclipsing the club record free Bolton paid Fenerbahce for Nicolas Anelka.

verton manager David Moyes has insisted that England striker Andrew Johnson is not for sale.
Speculation has mounted over the 27-year-old's future, with several clubs reportedly interested in him.
However, Moyes has moved quickly to dispel the rumours and said the club have no intention of letting him leave as he remains a key part of his plans.
"Andy Johnson is not for sale - it is that simple," Moyes told the official club website.
"He is a highly-valued member of my senior squad and I look forward to seeing him when the players report back for pre-season training."
Johnson joined Everton in 2006 for £8.6m from Crystal Palace and has scored 22 goals in all competitions from 64 starts.
He only signed a new five-year deal with the club in November 2007 after being linked with a move to West Ham.
606: DEBATE
Would you like to see Johnson remain at Everton?
Meanwhile, Everton have concerns over the fitness of Tony Hibbert and Joseph Yobo ahead of the new season.
Right-back Hibbert ruptured his medial ligaments in the penultimate game of last season against Arsenal and faces an anxious wait to see if he will require surgery.
"I'm hoping for the specialist to say that I won't need an operation and I just want to kick on from where I am now," Hibbert told evertonTV.
"We didn't realise at first how bad it was and then the specialist said it was bad - but it's just one of those things."
Yobo has revealed that he has been suffering from an ankle knock while on international duty with Nigeria this summer.
The defender said he has been playing through the pain for his country but is confident he will be fit in time for Everton's Premier League opener against Blackburn on 16 August.
"What many people don't know is that I have been playing with an ankle injury," he confirmed.
"I was supposed to rest it but we had crucial games to play and we were short at the back so I was needed because of injuries so I just had to force myself to play.
"The medical team here in Nigeria have been great and they helped me to manage it for this period.
"Now I have to give it the rest it needs so I can be ready for pre-season training with my club."

Yossi Benayoun wants to stay and fight for his place at Liverpool, even if the club are willing to let him go.
The 28-year-old midfielder has been linked with a move away from Anfield, with Tottenham, Portsmouth and Ajax all reported as potential suitors.
